Two skiers rescued after cold night stuck on Mount Seymour

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It was a happy ending for two skiers who went out of bounds on Mount Seymour and got stuck this weekend.

They had to spend a cold night on the mountain. The pair were prepared for a day of backcountry skiing, but on the way back, they got sucked into the Suicide Gully drainage.

They managed to find an emergency cache, where they spent the night, and get enough of a cell signal to keep in touch with rescue crews.

The pair were rescued by helicopters the next morning.

Mike Danks with North Shore Rescue says it’s a cautionary tale that in the backcountry anyone can find themselves in trouble.

“If you’re not really familiar with the area it can happen quite easily. I think these two really did the right thing — they got to that cache. We actually have a sign there that says ‘wait for rescue.'”

Danks says NSR’s message remains the same.

“Stay in bounds where the avalanche danger is controlled,” says Danks.

“Get up the mountain early and get the powder, but if you’re going into the back country, just make sure you’re prepared to do so. [Make sure] you have your avalanche safety equipment and you’ve checked the avalanche bulletin.”
