Salt-sand road mix good for drivers, bad for motorcyclists says safety expert

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS 1130) – This weekend will see a lot of two-wheeled riders heading to the Abbotsford Motorcycle Show.

But the weekend comes with a warning on the Lower Mainland roads.

It might be drying up, but thanks to all the snow and ice, every road in the region is covered with a blanket of sand and gravel.

Patrick Frampton teaches a course in motorbike safety and says while that mix was good drivers, it’s very dangerous for motorcyclists.

“If you’re riding along and suddenly you’re making a left turn or a right turn and you get into this, what we call pea gravel or sand, it can wash out the back end of your bike and next thing you know you’re doing a high side ad you could be seriously hurt.,” says Frampton.

“The gravel that they used along with the salt is very very fine… It’s almost like riding on tiny ball bearings. It’s really slippery.”

He also adds many drivers at this time of year aren’t prepared for motorcyclists, but is asking everyone to pay extra attention this weekend with hundreds of riders expected to be out and about.
