Vancouver’s False Creek Flats plan set to be unveiled this evening

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s a plan to completely transform Vancouver’s False Creek Flats, with the aim of adding more than 20,000 jobs over the next 30 years. The city is set to unveil its draft of that vision this evening.

A lot of health and science-related positions are expected to come with the makeover, especially with the new St. Paul’s Hospital set to be built in that area.

Greater Vancouver Board of Trade Chief Executive Iain Black has pushed for no new residential housing to allow for the better movement of trucks and trains doing business in the area.

“With respect to any new residential development, that’s our primary concern,” says Black. “We’re not looking to see existing residential developments be taken away, but we are looking to make sure that there’s no additional one added, because they increase the population density in that area. That’s not a good mix when you’re trying to move around the delivery trucks that are loaded up with vegetables to feed all those families, frankly.”

Following this evening’s meeting, staff will use any feedback to further shape plans for the region. “It’s not a good mix with trains, train lines and the rail corridors and all the important traffic that has to get to our port to really drive our economy,” argues Black. “We wouldn’t want to see an increase in residential development in that area, and we’re comfortable that the city understands that as a priority.”

The open house is at 231 Industrial Avenue from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
