SURREY (NEWS 1130) – A group which has been pushing for new school spaces is obviously pleased with the new funding, but they say this plan lacks long term vision.
According to an advocate with Surrey Schools Now, Surrey is set to be back in the same situation as soon as these new schools open.
“We’ve got 7,000 students in portables right now. If we have an influx of approximately 1,000 students each year, that’s going to be [a total of] 10,000 in three years. Minus the 5,000 students, we’ve still got 5,000 students in portables,” says Cindy Daglish, who has been pushing for new funding for schools.
She says the education ministry needs to come up with a long-term plan to make sure schools in Surrey can accommodate growth, which doesn’t seem to be slowing.
She had hoped an announcement on that would be coming today.
While the funding is good news according to a parents group, there are fears Surrey will be back in a portables pickle soon unless other changes are made
