How the US ban on several Muslim countries affects Canada

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Over the weekend, US President Donald Trump announced a travel ban on people from seven predominately Muslim countries. The news sparked confusion and protests on both sides of the border, including a large one at Peace Arch Border.

But for many of us in Canada, if you plan on travelling, what does the ban mean?

The countries impacted by President Trump’s ban are Syria, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen and Libya. Federal Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen says permanent residents of Canada will be able to enter the US, provided they have a valid Canadian permanent resident card, and a passport from one of the seven affected countries.

Over the weekend, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted, “To those fleeing persecution, terror and war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength.” The tweet was widely applauded and critical according to Hussen.

“It was very important for the prime minister to issue that tweet, to communicate a strong tradition, a long history of providing sanctuary and protection to those who are fleeing war and persecution.”

Dual citizens with a Canadian passport are also allowed into the US as well.
