Cash incentives double for electric car buyers

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Here’s new reason to get rid of your gas-guzzler. People looking to buy a new electric car in BC can get even more cash than in the past.

Up until now, the cash incentive to bring in your old car and buy an electric vehicle was $3,000. That’s now been bumped up to $6,000 if you buy a new electric vehicle.

It remains at $3,000 if you buy a used electric vehicle. Your used car can be of any vintage.

Dennis Rogoza with the BC Scrap it Program points out buyers can also take advantage of other incentives.

“If you buy a new electric car with our program, you can also get another $5,000 thanks to the province’s CEVfoBC® program. And some retailers are offering money. So depending on the make and the model, you could get $15,000 in incentives for a new vehicle.”

He says they managed to put over 600 electric vehicles on the road in BC since 2015, while offering only the $3,000 incentive.

The goal is now loftier.

“We’re looking to put 500 new electric cars and 400 used ones on the road. That’s 900 altogether by the end of the year.”

To date, the BC Scrap it Program has removed over 40,000 older vehicles across the province.
