Say goodbye to backyards? That might be the case as developers break ground

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Are traditional single-family homes with a backyard a thing of the past?

The idea is certainly gaining momentum in larger cities like Vancouver and Toronto.

Things like greenbelts and Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) are simply forcing developers to build up, not out says John Daly, a senior editor with the Globe and Mail’s Report on Business Magazine, adding existing green patches are also vanishing.

“In parts of downtown Toronto, that’s what’s happening. Property is getting so expensive yet often the houses themselves are taking up more of the lot. That, and people if they have separate garage in the backyard, that’s being turned into laneway housing.”

He says the younger generation is more accepting of life in condos

But real estate agents say, once they start having kids, a lot of them have a hankering for the house with a backyard that they grew up in.”
