More protection coming for BC animals

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – More protections are coming to animals in this province.

The BC Liberals are proposing legislation that would regulate commercial pet breeders to make sure those in the industry are treating cats and dogs with the respect and care they deserve.

The move has long been called for by the BC SPCA and has the support of the Canadian Kennel Club and the Canadian Cat Association.

Lorie Chortyk with the BC SPCA is thrilled.

“We’ve had so many issued particularly in the past year around puppy mills, around large catteries where cats are treated terribly. This is just such a huge step forward in ensuring that people who make a living off of animals are doing it properly.”

A third-party agency would have the power to inspect breeding facilities, enforce laws, and get warrants to enter a property if necessary.
