Unsung Hero: Local man steps up to teach kids

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Congratulations to our Unsung Hero Robert Watt. He was nominated for the award by Emma and Robin Juergensen. Take a look at his story.

Rob is the Secretary and Registrar for the Robert Malcolm Memorial Pipe Band a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of youth leaders through piping, drumming and Scottish culture.

Rob has given over 15 years of his time to this year-round volunteer position, continuing on well after his own child had grown up, all for the benefit of the hundreds of kids that come through the program.

He coordinates communications, registrations, instructor schedules, new player orientations, practice schedules, community performance requests, parking, facility bookings and weekly newsletters among many other tasks for four bands and three beginner programs — well over 150 people at any time.

Rob does all this with a fun and cheerful attitude, never hesitating to encourage and thank others in his weekly newsletters or in person, but rarely being recognized for his outstanding performance. All of us, parents and players alike, would be lost without Rob to keep us informed, on schedule and engaged with one another.

Alpine Credits is acknowledging Rob with $500 to say thanks for stepping up and they’re also making a $1,000 donation to the Ronald McDonald House Children’s Charity.
