Police warn of new online fraud scams

OTTAWA, ON. (NEWS 1130) – We may still have hours to go until March arrives, but that’s not preventing the Competition Bureau of Canada and the RCMP from officially launching their campaign to mark Fraud Prevention Month.

This year they’re urging people to report every case of fraud, and warning of new online risks. However, that saying that ‘if it’s too good to be true, then it probably is’ still rings true especially in our digital world.

Bureau Commissioner John Pecman says fraudsters are not only targeting seniors, the poor and new Canadians through traditional methods, but they’re adapting their techniques to social media. “That targets the younger generations through spoof websites, ransomware and employment scams.”

Throughout the next month the bureau and Mounties will be using Twitter and Facebook to educate Canadians about preventing fraud.
Since 2014 it’s estimated Canadians lost about $290 million due to fraud.
