BC government to allow ride-hailing services by Christmas

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – UPDATE: Transportation Minister Todd Stone has announced the province has given the green light to ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft. The services are said to be available by Christmas.

At a news conference Todd Stone and the Minister responsible for TransLink Peter Fassbender will hold a news conference to make an announcement about “modernizing the taxi industry.”

Just last week, NEWS 1130 heard from Fassbender who had said the province would make and release its stance on ride-hailing services before the upcoming provincial election.

“The government has said, ‘We are going to develop a made-in-BC solution for this issue.’ And we’re going to do it remembering that it isn’t just about providing new opportunities but respecting the existing industry,” Fassbender said last week at the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade’s Transportation Summit.

BC has been a bit behind the times, when it comes to ride-hailing with virtually all major cities around the world allowing the service. ICBC’s car insurance monopoly has allowed the province to have total control on when the service actually rolls out.

British Columbians will go to the polls on May 9th.
