Major upgrades announced for Highways 91 and 17

DELTA (NEWS 1130) – A $245 million project aims to ease congestion around Nordel Way, Highway 91, and Highway 17. It includes a re-designed and expanded interchange at Nordel and Highway 91, and a new interchange to replace traffic signals at Highway 17 and the connector to Highway 91.
The federal government says the total cost of the project is $245,176,671. Ottawa is contributing $81,671,139, the provincial government is contributing about $80 million, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is contributing approximately $80 million and the Tsawwassen First Nation is contributing just over $3 million.
“These highway upgrades will reduce travel times for container trucks serving Delta port and for British Columbians living in communities south of the Fraser River. By improving the flow of traffic through this region, residents and local businesses will be better connected to their communities, both socially and economically,” says Delta MP Carla Qualtrough.
Construction is expected to begin some time this year and is expected to be completed by 2021. Ottawa claims this will generate $194 million in economic benefit and an estimated 745 direct construction jobs over the course of the project.
