Vancouver cancer patient seeks life-saving treatment in Seattle

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – After exhausting every possible treatment option in BC, a young woman from Vancouver needs private funding to get life-saving help at a clinic in Seattle.

The experimental trial is not covered by the Medical Services Plan.

Ann Ness has been battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia for 17 years and this is her fifth round with the disease.

The 28-year-old, originally from Kamloops, says doctors here have done everything they can to help, but now she needs at least $700,000 for special chemotherapy in Washington State.

“I’m just so grateful for them because they, the fact that my doctor even knowing, like, she wrote that letter to ask the MSP to see if they would cover this, knowing that they’re going to reject them –having applied for assistance from MSP for other patients.”

Since Ness started her crowd-funding campaign on Tuesday, she’s raised about $11,000 so far.

“This is kind of my only option now.”

Ness adds she wishes the treatment she needs was available in Vancouver.

“It’s just frustrating when that treatment is available two and a half hours away and the only thing stopping me is, like, a very large sum of money. More than anything, it’s just so frustrating and, but at the same time, I have to do whatever I can to try to get there.”
