BCTF out with 30-second campaign-style ad

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – With just weeks to go until BC heads to the polls, you can expect to see more campaign-style ads to hit the airwaves.

A 30-second spot by the BC Teachers’ Federation set to debut tomorrow.

The ad is the first part of the union’s campaign leading up to the May provincial election and the period when school district budgets are set for the coming year.

A Supreme Court decision last fall restored class size bargaining rights previously blocked by the government.

Speaking at the BCTF’s AGM this weekend, president Glen Hansman reminded his members of the back forth that led to that ruling.

“The government was acting unconstitutionally, bargaining in bad faith, intentionally provoking strikes, rather than trying to reach a deal, and stripping teachers of their rights and denying a whole generation of kids the services they ought to have had,” he says.

“99 per cent of the problems between the federation and the provincial government are directly linked to that unconstitutional legislation that Christy Clark as Minister of Education brought in back in 2002.”
