Horgan encouraged by strong early voting numbers

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – With six days to go in the 2017 provincial election campaign, NDP Leader John Horgan sees the higher number of early voters as a positive sign.

According to Elections BC, 122,067 voters cast their ballots on the first day of early voting, up from approximately 105,000 in 2013. On Sunday alone, 108,967 people voted.

“People are anxious for a government that works for them, they’re tired, they can’t afford four more years of Christy Clark. People get that, and that’s why they’re turning out in large numbers,” Horgan says. “We have always worked very hard in the BC NDP to make sure that our supporters get to the polls. That’s one of the strengths of our political party… we have people on our side. We have people power, and we put that to good effect, making sure we get our supporters to the polls.”

Horgan adds that having six advance voting days this election, up from four in 2013, gives his party more opportunities to get NDP votes in the ballot box.

With just six days to go in the campaign, it’s a little late for any of the parties to roll out new policy proposals. So, Horgan’s campaign announcement in North Vancouver today was largely used to attack the BC Liberals, who have recently waffled on the idea of bringing in a value added tax.

Horgan says he will spend his final days on the campaign trail trying to connect with voters. “I’m going to be driving hard for the next six days… to be just down to the last six is very exciting and I’m exhilarated by the candidates, by the people that have my back,” he says.

Advance polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day until Saturday, though not all advance voting places will be open on every one of those days.
