Bad ballots discovered before being distributed in Maple Ridge-Mission

MAPLE RIDGE (NEWS 1130) – Elections BC is confident the ballots that are being distributed to polling stations will be free of any marks that don’t belong there.

The reassurances come after some ballots destined for Maple Ridge-Mission were found to have misprints.

Elections BC says before the ballots were used for advance voting, a small black dot was detected in the circle for one of the candidates on some ballots.

Once the misprint was discovered, the ballots were replaced.

“We also informed all the campaigns, so that scrutineers and election officials could watch out for any of the misprinted ballots just in case any of them slipped through and were distributed to a voting place,” says Andrew Watson with Elections BC.

As far as they know, none of the misprinted ballots have ended up in a voter’s hands.

They are aware of a social media post by an individual who said her father had a misprinted ballot. Watson says they’ve reached out to her to assure her and her father that his ballot was not spoiled.

“If one of these ballots was used by a voter, the voter’s intention would be very clear, and the ballot would be counted properly.”

Watson says he’s not sure how many of the ballots had to be destroyed.
