Cruise ship season’s busiest day so far

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Thousands of tourists are milling about Downtown Vancouver today as the local cruise ship season sees its first busy day of the year. Three ships are in port at the same time, meaning traffic downtown may be busier than usual for a Saturday.

Carmen Ortega with the Port of Vancouver says our city offers some unique experiences.

“And those are the seven-day one-way itineraries that go up to the Gulf of Alaska and Vancouver is the only home port that can offer that sailing. And then the reverse also takes place, where passengers embark in Anchorage and Seward and Whittier and then they come down to Vancouver.”

Ortega expects 13,000 passengers around Canada Place today.

“We do work closely with the City of Vancouver on traffic management and we also deploy Vancouver Police traffic authority on all the key crosswalks and intersections to help manage the flow of traffic, and then we’ll also have a lot of our own staff on site.

There are six more days this month when there will be three cruise ships in port at the same time.
