VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – If you’re driving in Vancouver today, you may find it tough to get around, as a number of road closures are set up.
The annual BMO Vancouver Marathon was on this morning, with about 16,000 runners taking part – about the same number as last year.
Daniel Kipkoech was first to finish the marathon with an unofficial time of 2:19:09. Gladys Tarus was the first female marathon runner to cross finish line, in 2:39:38.
Canadian race walker and Olympian Evan Dunfee walked the race, finishing with an unofficial time of 3:10:35.
Race director Graeme White admits like the Sun Run last month, the bad weather over winter may have affected registrations.
“Absolutely, I think BC runners have been hit, maybe Alberta and Washington runners because of the harsh weather conditions we’ve had.”
White says most runners aren’t from BC.
“We have 48 of 50 states with runners coming and we have runners from over 65 countries, so the popularity of this event continues to grow.”
There are several road closures in place until 4 pm.
