Tories move motion against federal defence minister

OTTAWA, ON. (NEWS 1130) – The federal opposition is continuing its assault on the federal defence minister over his exaggerated claim that he was the architect of a key battle during the war in Afghanistan. The Tories have now moved a motion against Harjit Sajjan.

The Conservatives have an opposition motion declaring the House of Commons has lost confidence in defence minister Sajjan’s ability to continue in his job.

Tory James Bezan is the MP who put it forward, and he feels Sajjan has to go. “His reputation is beyond repair. His reputation is tarnished and it is really his honour that is at stake and for him to do the right thing and to resign.”

The Tories had previously asked Speaker Geoff Regan to rule on whether Sajjan mislead MPs when he blamed the previous government for cutting the tax benefits available to Canadian soldiers in Kuwait.

Sajjan has already apologized on several occasions for his comments and says he wants to move on and focus on the important work in his file, such as the defence policy review that will be released in the coming weeks.

The prime minister has expressed his confidence in the minister, and the chief of defence staff for the military has said he considers the matter closed. This motion won’t likely pass due to a Liberal majority.

Sajjan is a former Vancouver Police officer and is an MP for Vancouver South.
