Arrest made involving fatal shooting outside a Surrey hotel

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – A 22-year-old man in custody was arrested on weapons charges in Merritt last month.

Johnny Steven Drynock, who’s been charged with one count of first degree murder, is being held in a Kamloops jail.

He’s accused of killing 29-year-old Birinderjeet Bhangu on March 13th.

Police say images of him and the shooting were captured on video surveillance cameras in the parking lot of the Comfort Inn near the Fraser Highway.

At the time, investigators pointed out witnesses to the afternoon violence included children.

The suspect’s vehicle was found the next day in Kelowna.

RCMP Staff Sergeant Jennifer Pound says Drynock already has a criminal record and he’s been in custody on weapons charges since April 8th.

“There are some details that we’re not going to be able to speak about just simply because it’s now before the court, so information such as motive, criminal link-relationship between the suspect-victim, those are all going to have to be reserved for the court process ahead.”

He’s in Kamloops now, but Drynock’s next court appearance will be in Surrey on Friday.

Bhangu was a well-known gangster with a criminal record dating back more than a decade.

Statement on behalf of Birinder Bhangu’s family

This devastating incident is something that has changed our lives forever; it is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of our son, our brother and our friend.

Birinder was a very loving, respectful and warm hearted individual who did not deserve to be taken from us so soon in this horrendous way.

Although, Birinder’s loss will forever impact our lives in a way that even we will truly never understand, the first degree murder charge has brought a sense of relief to all of our hearts.

We would like to thank the members of the Integrated homicide investigation team and the public for all the hard work they have put into this on-going investigation since March 13, 2017.

Bringing forward these charges today on the individual responsible for this senseless act of violence, has brought some justice to Birinder’s family and loved ones.
