Canada should hold back sharing information with US: expert

OTTAWA, ON. (NEWS 1130) – With the world abuzz about US President Donald Trump sharing highly classified information with Russia, some may be wondering how Canada should deal with the White House moving forward.

Andre Gerolymatos, SFU professor and co-director of the Terrorism, Risk and Securities Studies Program, says Canada should be very concerned. “People who work in the Canadian intelligence community are keeping their cards much closer to their chest than before.”

On Thursday, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said he’s confident that all 28 members of the military alliance can still safely share information, despite the president’s “loose lips” with Russian diplomats.

Gerolymatos thinks Canada should tread carefully with Trump going forward. “I think Canada should wait for the time being before sharing any vital secrets because Trump likes to show off with other world leaders and pass on key information.”

With Canada intertwined with the US on so many levels, Gerolymatos sees Canada being susceptible to compromised information on so many levels. “It could be economic information, it could be industrial information. It could be anything. They are our biggest partners not just in intelligence and trade, but also in sharing industrial information.”

But rather than making a public display, Gerolymatos suggests that Canada reacts privately with respect to the Trump administration.
