Controversial Chinatown condo development goes back before council Tuesday night

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A controversial development is back before Vancouver City Council on Tuesday night.

An opponent warns, if approved, it would fundamentally reshape the heart of Chinatown.

The 12-storey condo project proposed by the Beedie Group would go up right next to the Chinese-Canadian memorial at 105 Keefer Street.

“There’s 110 market units for sale and most of Main Street has already been…like it’s all condos already so we don’t want another huge gentrifying project in the neighbourhood,” explains Beverly Ho with the Chinatown Concern Group.

The group is circulating a petition.

“Our demands are that there’s no market housing at the site, that the rents are at pension rates, so 30 per cent of OAS, that we have a permanent, multi-purpose space that’s free and focused on seniors.”

Ho calls the development proposal disrespectful because, if built as is, it would only serve to price seniors out of the neighbourhood.
