VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A sinkhole has opened up on Anderson St at the entrance to Granville Island this morning.
Currently no vehicle traffic is allowed onto the Island. There will continue to be traffic disruptions around Granville Island until further notice. Motorists are being urged to plan other transportation options.
City of Vancouver engineers have assessed the site and crews are beginning repairs to some sort of waterline break.
Lisa Ono with Granville Island says it’s business as usual for local stores.
“There’s no safety issue, we’re simply just taking precautions to make sure the road is passable by vehicles.”
Julian works nearby.
“Got here at 10.30 this morning and they had one lane of traffic going on the island. It was just a small little sinkhole and I guess it’s doubled or tripled in size now.”
“Everyone’s inn disbelief. Everyone’s kind of joking that Granville Island’s going to be an island.”
