RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – Richmond firefighters are still trying to figure out what caused a massive fire at a mattress recycling facility on Mitchell Island Friday afternoon.
Thick, black smoke could be seen from across the region.
Owen called the newsroom earlier from across the river and said he could taste it.
Richmond Fire Chief John McGowan says everyone at the site got out safely.
“The fire [has] actually extended to, again, a good quantity of the material that is on site. The incident is ongoing, and cause at this time is unknown.”
He says the department had a lot of resources on this fire because of its size.
The on and off ramps on the Knight Street Bridge were closed for a portion of the afternoon. Listen to NEWS 1130 for Traffic updates every ten minutes on the ones.
YVR says the smoke was not having any effect on incoming or outgoing flights.
