Custom drums stolen from SFU pipe band

PORT COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) – The award-winning SFU pipe band is down on its luck right now after some of its custom-made equipment was stolen over the weekend but there has been a break in the case.

The team now has surveillance footage reportedly showing a thief on a bike taking a couple of drums, harnesses and some personal items from the car of a band member between 3:17 a.m. and 3:25 a.m. on June 18th. One drum was strapped to the front, the other on the back. The member stored the musical equipment in the car and left it near Percy Perry Stadium in Coquitlam after the group had a get together late Saturday night.

“It’s not the end of the world but it’s a massive inconvenience because we’re now two drums short of what we normally use to get through the season. We do have enough drums to use but we have no spares and having a couple of spare drums is imperative to what we do,” explains Reid Maxwell, who is in charge of the drum corps.

He adds in total about $4,000 has been stolen. “Each drum would be worth roughly $1,300 and the harnesses would be about $600 each.”

This is bad news as the band has upcoming competitions in Kamloops and the Skagit Valley. They’re also gearing up to win the world title in Glasgow in August, an honour it has received several times in the past.

He says if the thief is thinking about re-selling the items — it may be a bad idea because the equipment is emblazoned with the SFU school colours and emblem.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call the band or police.
