Site C workers union meets with BC Greens

LANGLEY (NEWS 1130) — Things are a bit strange right now for unions and groups trying to figure out exactly where they should put their efforts when lobbying British Columbia’s political parties.

The uncertain leadership future and what exactly will come down in the throne speech Thursday has at least one group covering its bases.

The Christian Labour Association of Canada (CLAC), the union representing over 1,000 employees working on the Site C Clean Energy Project, has been meeting with Andrew Weaver.

Ryan Bruce, the government relations point-man with CLAC, says they haven’t exactly changed the Green Party leader’s mind about wanting to halt Site C.

“We consider it as an opportunity to reach out and explain a little bit more about who we are, so there’s some positives taken from that, but all in all , with the uncertainty and not knowing where things are going to fall, it is a little strange I guess you could say.”

He says even more than standing against the project, it’s the uncertainty that is hard for those hoping they’ll still have a job when the political dust settles.

“As we go through this debate when investors are watching and looking at maybe investing in projects in British Columbia, I can see them being a little concerned and perhaps a big red circle is being drawn around our province.”

CLAC is currently circulating a petition amidst its members in support of the Site C project.
