VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – After last night’s massive fire there, today crews are working to demolish the smouldering remains of several businesses and one home.
Seven long-time businesses in Kerrisdale have been destroyed.
Crews from three fire halls battled a massive blaze at a strip of stores and restaurants on West 41st and Maple.
Seven businesses including a tailor, hair studio and ice cream shop along with two residences are housed in the aging complex.
Fortis BC is digging up the gas main to shut it off before the buildings at 41st and Maple St can be demolished later today.
One of the stores impacted by the fire was a thrift store.
Deb Lowell with the Salvation Army says there is some good news after this.
“We were saddened by the temporary closure of our store, but we’re so grateful. Our staff are part of our family and they are safe. We are very thankful for that.”
At one point, heavy black smoke from the fire could be seen from across Metro Vancouver.
No reports of any injuries or word on a cause at this point.
At least 50 firefighters attended the scene and crews will remain at the scene on Friday.
