Woman charged for threatening to harm or kill Premier Christy Clark

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – Charges of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm have been approved against a woman who is said to have threatened Premier Christy Clark and current Speaker of the House Steve Thomson.

Crown Counsel says the threats are believed to have taken place on or around April 30th in Kelowna.

Pavla Janeckova has been released from custody and she is set to make a court appearance on June 30th in Kelowna.

A special prosecutor, who was appointed to handle the case in May, approved the charges shortly after a report was handed in. Kris Pechet is a senior New Westminster lawyer in private practice, according to a statement from the Crown.

Pechet says the charges stem from recorded telephone messages left at constituency offices at the end of April.

“Anytime somebody who’s running for office –it wouldn’t have mattered who it is– but anytime anybody’s threatened who’s in the midst of running for office, it really should be taken seriously.”

No specific details have been released, but it’s believed the calls involved what’s been described as “a general view of how government is performing”.

Dan McLaughlin with the BC Prosecution Service says Janeckova is not in custody.

“She was initially arrested and released on conditions. These conditions include that she have no contact with the named persons –the subjects of the threats.”

A spokesperson for the premier says she won’t be commenting at this time.
