Horse euthanized after plunging down a ravine near Williams Lake

WILLIAMS LAKE (NEWS 1130) – Six people were hurt, and a horse had to be euthanized when a stage coach plunged about 12 meters down a ravine in northern BC on Tuesday.

The horse-pulled coach belonged to a local First Nation that was taking part in an annual ride marking the start of the Williams Lake Stampede, which begins Thursday.

The stage coach and horses lost control and went off road, plunging and rolling down an embankment.

“Sadly we had to put down one of the horses involved in the accident, after receiving permission to do so from one of the elders involved in the ride,” says RCMP Cpl. Madonna Saunderson.

Mounties, search and rescue, and air ambulance crews secured the people who were injured to stretchers and used ropes to raise them back to the road.

Saunderson adds a recent mud slide in the area made the rescue more challenging.

Four people received non-life threatening injuries, while two others were able to walk up the slope.
