Arrests after photo-op causes traffic headache on Lions Gate

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – We now know why the Lions Gate Bridge was closed for several hours today and you may not believe it.

Vancouver Police say they’ve arrested two men in their 20s and are recommending charges after they apparently climbed the span this morning causing major traffic headaches. Investigators say they did it all for a photo-op. The men are visiting from the US.

“Motorists crossing the Lions Gate Bridge around 8:30 a.m. called 911 after seeing a man wearing a headlamp and carrying a large backpack, climb over the railing and pull himself up the guy-wires to about 50 to 70 feet up the bridge deck,” explains Constable Jason Doucette.

When responding officers got to the scene, they could not see the man from the bridge deck. The Emergency Response Team’s high-angle rescue specialists were then called in and deployed to find the enclosed pathways and the guy-wire systems on the crossing.

The two men have had their camera equipment seized after they were busted scaling down the wires in front of officers.
