Where’s the PM? Trudeau yet to visit wildfire areas

KAMLOOPS (NEWS 1130) – Some people may be wondering: why hasn’t Justin Trudeau come out to British Columbia to meet evacuees and to get a first-hand look at the wildfire damage?

Despite serious fires burning for almost two weeks, the Prime Minister has yet to visit ground zero of the wildfire situation.

SFU Marketing Professor Lindsay Meredith says Trudeau should be here to show people he cares.

“It doesn’t hurt from a marketing standpoint if the boss shows up and takes a look at things, so he really knows what’s going on out here,” Meredith says.

“Otherwise you get stuck with that old problem we’ve always had in Canada, and that is action only seems to happen in Ontario and Quebec. And the west feels, basically, unloved.”

The Prime Minister’s Office says there are no immediate plans for Trudeau to come to BC, because they don’t want his visit to disrupt the work crews are doing on the ground.

However, he may visit once the fires are under control.

Meredith says if the PM does decide to come, he’d better make sure he’s up to speed with what’s happening.

“Not just let it filter through 42 layers of government bureaucrats. There’s nothing like the boss getting his hands dirty, being right on the situation. Then he knows what’s really happening, he knows exactly how bad it is and he knows exactly how badly the resources are needed.”
