Sports streaming service DAZN aims to make big splash

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Many people have dropped cable packages in recent years in favour of simply going with Netflix or another streaming service.

Live sports has been one reason many have stuck with their cable packages.

But DAZN (pronounced DA-ZONE), is hoping to shake things up.

It’s offering an NFL package which includes all games for 20 bucks a month, and promises to acquire the rights of other sports leagues.

Igor Bonifacic is a senior editor with MobileSyrup, a mobile-tech news website.

He says it’s a good deal for people who are exclusively NFL fans, but less appealing for the general sports fan who prefers variety.

“It is $20 a month, compared with Sportsnet Now, which is Rogers’ offering, which includes the Blue Jays,” says Bonifacic. “You also have more than 100 NHL games, and quite a few NBA games. That’s $25 a month.”

In this market, DAZN only has the rights to the NFL for now — but in other countries has shown its ambition, acquiring Champions League soccer rights in Japan, Germany and Austria.

“It’s not going to cover all your needs,” says Bonifacic. “That’s the most important thing to stress at the end of the day. At this point, anyway, it’s not a comprehensive replacement for your existing sports packages.”
