Air quality advisory extended for Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — As smoke from wildfires in the Interior continues to blanket the region, an air quality advisory for Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley has been extended.

Doctor Bonnie Henry, BC’s Deputy Provincial Health Officer, says people with chronic medical conditions should avoid strenuous exercise until the advisory is lifted

“Staying indoors as much as possible and reducing outdoor physical activity for people who have to be outdoors. Some of the police and other services, for example, they are wearing respirators if they need be in the areas where the smoke is the worst.”

Henry says the elderly and anyone with asthma or other breathing-related conditions are most at risk.

“They are people who have a plan to make sure they know if their condition gets worse that they have their rescue medication and they have access to medical services if need be. We do know it’s going to be bad over a large area of the province for the coming weeks.”

Henry says the best thing to do is stay indoors as much as possible because this advisory is expected to continue until the weather gets better — which could be a number of days.
