Bear sightings up in Port Moody

PORT MOODY (NEWS 1130) – Bears and cougars are keeping Port Moody police busy this year.

Chief Constable Dave Fleugel says the number of calls about bears and other animals is up nearly 60 per cent.

“Some of the statistics we’re running here this year show about a 58 per cent increase in these types of calls over last year and even 2015.”

Fleugel says Port Moody police haven’t had to kill any animals this year, but officers did shoot a less lethal projectile at a bear to get it to leave the area.

Fleugel expects this trend to continue.

“We’re sitting at 115 calls for service so far in Port Moody, and those really started to rise around April and traditionally they continue to climb right up until the fall, into November.”

Fleugel says this is a good reminder to people not to put their garbage too early.
