$500,000 in ICBC insurance claims due to BC wildfires

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – ICBC says it’s received 124 insurance claims related to the wildfires so far, costing about $500,000.

Most of the claims have come from the Cariboo region and are related to extreme heat and smoke damage. Some cars were even rendered as total losses.

Lindsay Olsen with the insurance provider says the $500,000-figure is a fairly good representation of how many people have been affected because most drivers do opt in for additional coverage.

And she says if your car is affected by the fires and your comprehensive coverage recently expired, you may not be out of luck. “We’re being flexible and, as long as it recently expired, you’ll still be able to purchase the coverage.”

ICBC is also allowing anyone affected by the fires who has bought a new car to purchase full optional coverage.

This has been the worst wildfire season on record in BC.

Campfire ban lifted in some parts of BC

While many BC wildfires keep more than 2,000 people out of their homes, campfires are again being allowed in some parts of the northern half of the province.

It’s thanks to cooler weather reducing the risk of flames spreading in the Prince George, Fort St. James, Mackenzie, Peace and Fort Nelson forest districts, as well as in the Northwest and Coast Mountain districts.

A ban remains in effect for the Vanderhoof and Nadina regions. Failing to obey a campfire ban could land you a $1,150 ticket.
