Woman behind racist tirade on the SkyTrain is well known to police

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – It turns out the woman who lost her temper and went off on a racist rant against an elderly couple on the SkyTrain earlier this week is known to police. Now, the 75-year-old’s offensive comments have gone viral on social media.

This happened on Monday between stops in Burnaby. Her target was an elderly couple.

Transit Police say someone pressed the yellow emergency strip on the train which alerts attendants that there’s a problem.

When the train pulled into the station at Brentwood Mall, a couple of officers boarded and spoke to witnesses and the couple, but the woman had already left.

In the short video posted to Facebook, the woman can be heard screaming and saying, “I was born and raised right here” and “go back to the f—ing Philippines.”

The next step in the investigation is for police to talk to her.

Ann Drennan with Transit Police says the woman’s previous run-ins with officers surround anger-related issues. “She becomes extremely angry, uses her temper and does various things in the throes of her anger. There’s no physical violence involved but it appears to be more verbal.”

When they speak to her, Drennan adds they’ll talk about how to behave appropriately when taking transit and they’ll warn her of the potential of charges if she does this again.

Paula Correa shot the video because she wanted everyone to see what happened. “Social media provides an illusion that these things happen in other places, in other countries — in the USA, for example. But it can happen in the very place we call our home and it does happen and it did happen.”

She adds before she got off the train, she and other passengers spoke to the couple to apologize for the woman’s behaviour.

The video has been seen thousands of times and has hundreds of shares.

Transit Police are using this incident to remind people they can text Transit Police at 877777 if they feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
