Final federal NDP leaders debate in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The final federal NDP leaders debate is on today in Vancouver. Charlie Angus, Guy Caron, and Jagmeet Singh will share a stage while Niki Ashton will take part via video-conference.

Singh may be the one to watch, after locking up a key endorsement just last week.

On Thursday, long-time New Westminster-Burnaby MP Peter Julian threw his support behind the Ontario MPP. He says they share many of the same values.

Julian also applauded Singh for his work with people with disabilities and his skill to rally people in the suburbs. “I feel passionately about Canadians with disabilities and the stance he has taken will result, when we become government, in a sea change in the rights of people with disabilities right across this country.”

He went on to say, “What Jagmeet represents is the extraordinary diversity that we see in suburban Canada. We need to really penetrate those suburban ridings.”

Last week, Singh said he was humbled by the nod, adding Julian’s record speaks for itself. “For me this is a very significant day, probably one of the most significant in the campaign.”

New Democrats begin voting online for their new leader on September 18th, with first ballot results expected October 1st. The party says if no candidate receives a majority of the vote, the second and third round results announcements will take place in Montreal on October 8th and then in Ottawa on October 15th.
