Rally against Hawthorne Park project set for noon in Surrey

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – The fight for Hawthorne Park continues at noon. The fight is over a project that would see a road be built through the park.

Earlier this year city councilors voted to lift a 30-year-old protection bylaw, allowing a roadway to be built through the park.

Steven Pettigrew is one of the people who organized this rally. He says the fight to save the green space is uphill because many of the decisions have already been made.

“The entire city has already voted for the road, and then we’ve got to go and ask them one by one to ask them ‘do you really want the road?’,” he says. Once they find out what’s going on and they realize that by default they have already said yes, then they quickly say that this is not something we want to support.”

He also believes the City of Surrey made this intentionally more difficult by doing this during the summer when many people are still away.

“Just slogging us over the head with a two by four to try and get their point through. But we are determined. We are determined to save this park and there are so many people who are helping us out.”

The rally starts at noon at Surrey City Hall. David Suzuki will also speak at the event.
