Time to get your winter tires for many highways

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – If you’re planning an autumn trip into the Interior, keep in mind that as of today, winter tires are a legal necessity on many of the province’s highways.

And the penalty isn’t cheap. If you get caught without winter tires in an area where they’re mandatory, the fine is $109.

Bob Gilowski with VSA Highway Maintenance says even when it’s warm and sunny in the Lower Mainland, the mountains are a different story.

“People have to be aware of changing road conditions that can happen very, very quickly. They need to be aware of that and adjust their speeds accordingly.”

“They need to change their driving time expectations this time of the year and certainly as we get more into winter.”

And the most important thing to keep in mind:

“Always drive your vehicle at a speed that allows you to maintain control of that vehicle 100 per cent of the time.”

He adds that over the past few years, drivers have been getting better at complying with winter tire rules.
