Moose hunt closed in two Cariboo areas

WILLIAMS LAKE (NEWS 1130) – Moose hunters will have to avoid two areas in the Cariboo region this season, after wildfires ravaged the landscape.

The areas immediately north of Highway 20, west of Williams Lake and Quesnel, called Zones A and C of management unit 5-13, were badly damaged by the Chilcotin Plateau fire and don’t give the moose anywhere to hide from hunters, according to the Ministry of Forests.

The closure applies to all licensed hunting, including resident and guided hunters for the Oct. 15 to 31 and Nov. 1 to 15 seasons. It follows a previous ban on motor vehicles for the purpose of licensed hunting within the Chilcotin Plateau and Hanceville-Riske Creek area announced last week.

The ban comes after calls from a First Nations to close the moose hunt entirely this year because of the fires.

The areas will be checked over the winter to find out when hunting could reopen.
