TransLink invests millions to fight congestion and improve roads

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Snowy streets around Metro Vancouver might be cleared faster this winter, thanks to some extra cash from TransLink.

Close to $42 million is being invested this year across the region, to help deal with issues like pot holes, repaving and snow removal.

“Every year, TransLink puts money into the Major Road Network,” explains TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond. “This money goes directly to municipalities to keep major roads in a state of good repair.”

Each city will be responsible for how to spend this money, and funding comes as part of the Mayors’ Council 10-Year Vision.

This investment is part of a $65 million contribution by the transit authority this year, with the remaining $23 million being allocated to 51 projects around Metro Vancouver.

“That can improve walking and cycling infrastructure… these improvements will build upon existing connections, and improve accessibility for all users.”

According to TransLink, they’ll be putting forward an additional $130 million over the next two years to support the Major Road Network through similar capital projects.

“These projects will soon join a list of 330 completed roads, cycling and pedestrian improvements across the region since 2008.”

North Vancouver-Lonsdale MLA Bowinn Ma says Metro Vancouver has been waiting a long time for investments into regional infrastructures.

“We do need good, safe roads so that people can spend less time in their cars and more time with family and friends,” says Ma on behalf of Minister Selena Robinson and the province. “This government is absolutely committed to making life more affordable for British Columbians, while delivering the services people count on.”

Just five months ago, the Mayors’ Council urged the provincial government to make good on some of its transportation-related promises.

Ma says the province will be funding 40 per cent of the capital cost of the Mayors’ 10-Year Vision.
