Daylight Saving Time an opportunity to check your sleep habits

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Don’t forget. Tonight is the night we turn our clocks back and gain that extra hour of precious sleep.

And while the switch back to standard time is regarded as the “good” time change, Doctor Colleen Carney, director of Ryerson University’s Sleep and Depression Laboratory, says it’s also a good time to reflect on your sleep habits.

“Daylight Saving Time actually reminds us that we do have this internal clock and having regular rise times, bed times, meal times even, and regular timing of exposure to light. Even on an overcast day, it’s going to be very healthy for our clock.”

She says not getting enough shut eye opens you up to a whole host of issues.

“We’ve got cognitive disorders, dementias, cancer, cardiovascular disease, obesity, early death, motor vehicle accidents. We’ve got all kinds of problems with that.”

She says something as simple as maintaining a regular bed time can make a big difference.
