Greenpeace looks to teach Kinder Morgan protesters how to demonstrate

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Think of it as a crash-course for anti-pipeline demonstrators. A Greenpeace event being held today is aimed at educating those opposing Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain expansion.

It comes after five people were arrested at a Kinder Morgan protest in Burrard Inlet last month. Organizer Mary Lovell says today’s Ready for Action! event will provide training in non-violent direct action or peaceful resistance. “How to form blockades, how to de-escalate situations with police or security, and basically overall, just how to remain safe. We just want to make sure that people feel ready to resist and can work together as a community.”

Lovell adds 60 people have RSVP’d for the event. “Considering it’s a long weekend in Vancouver and people have a lot of fun, family things do, et cetera, I think it’s a really exciting start.”

The event was held at the Red Gate Art Society in Vancouver.

As for the pipeline, in September, Kinder Morgan announced construction of the $7.4 billion project would begin and would take up to 28 months to complete. Work has already begun on the terminal in Burnaby. The project will triple capacity on the pipeline from the Edmonton area to Burnaby and it was approved by the federal government last fall.

The BC NDP government has vowed to use “every tool available” to try to stop the expansion, but has admitted the options available to the province are limited.
