Man arrested following stabbing at Delta Walmart

DELTA (NEWS 1130) – A security guard is recovering and a man in his mid 20s is now in custody after a stabbing around the noon hour at a Walmart in Delta.

“Our initial investigation revealed that a loss prevention officer was attempting to apprehend a shoplifter, and that suspect stabbed the loss prevention officer in order to escape,” explains Sharlene Brooks with Delta Police Public Affairs. “He fled the area and police responded and were on scene within minutes.”

She says a containment area was set up, and a K-9 unit was deployed.

“Our patrol officers were very heads up on this and one of them observed a male matching our suspect’s description, approached the male and took him into custody without incident.”

According to police, the security guard suffered non-life threatening injuries but was taken to hospital for treatment. The suspect is known to police and is of no fixed address.

Brooks says this kind of incident doesn’t happen often, but is thankful the situation was resolved within about an hour.

Calls of this nature, however, are always a concern.

“They do present an unknown risk to the public, so it was important for us to be able to establish containment and ultimately locate and arrest this individual so,” she explains.
