Plea for help to re-locate displaced Vancouver birds

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A local bird sanctuary is turning to the public for help out of fear up to 100 parrots will be homeless by the end of January.

The Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary says its lease is up and the East Vancouver warehouse where the birds are currently kept is being torn down.

“Since 100 loud parrots don’t necessarily make the best neighbours it is hard to find space. As it stands we have no place to go. It is a desperate situation and we are working hard to resolve it, but so far nothing we have looked into has worked out,” says the facility in a statement.

Since last year, the sanctuary says it has been able to find homes for hundreds of birds which had been in poor conditions and were badly injured, including mutilation and self-harm. “About 30 of the remaining birds are either in foster care or at Night Owl Bird Hospital. They are safe, but the 100 at the shelter are in limbo.”

The sanctuary says it needs a space that is at least 2,500 sq. ft., on a ground flood with good ventilation and lots of outlets. “Noise cannot be a problem, and it has to be in an area where zoning regulations will allow us to be. We will likely need the space until late 2018.”
