It could be days before Highway 99 overpass repaired, as traffic detours continue in South Surrey

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – It could be days before damage caused by a truck striking an overpass in South Surrey is repaired, but the Ministry of Transportation can’t offer a solid estimate on when highway detours will end.

A truck with an excavator on board hit the 152nd Street overpass, meaning northbound traffic on Highway 99 is being detoured onto 16th Avenue. The overpass is also closed to traffic.

Kellen Truant, Bridge Area Manager with the Ministry’s Lower Mainland district, says the overheight vehicle hit the overpass around 10 a.m.

“He’s done quite a bit of damage, and that’s what we’re onsite assessing. We’ll have more information once we’ve been able to do a full assessment.”

He says the Ministry is hoping to have the highway fully open “in the next day or so”.

“This will be a significant repair so it will require a good deal of assessment.”

“It does happen and we have various degrees of damage, this is probably one of the more serious that I’ve seen.”

Several engineers are assessing the damage, which includes exposed metal and large chunks of concrete scattered on the highway.

Truant says Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement is working with the truck driver and owner of the company.
