How to avoid getting ripped off this holiday season

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – We’ve heard the warnings about scammers during the holiday season, but there’s something else you need to keep in mind as you do your shopping – counterfeit goods online.

If you’re doing some online shopping this Christmas, you might do well to heed a warning from the Better Business Bureau about counterfeit websites.

“One that’s come across our desk recently is one that was trying to rip off popular Canada Goose-brand winter jackets and winter parkas,” Evan Kelly with the Bureau says. “At first look it seemed like a fairly legitimate site, if you didn’t know what the actual site looks like. It’s got all these pictures of parkas and they were cut down to like $250.”

He says you should look out for mistakes on websites, like spelling errors or logos that may look a little blurry. But there’s one easy way to tell if a site is dodgy.

“Is the price too good to be true? If you know a Canada Goose-brand jacket, for example, is $1200, getting one for $250 is probably something you need to question,” Kelly says.

He adds you can also look out for social media links that go nowhere and a lack of contact information.
