Vancouver braces for more possible snow fall

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It might begin to look a lot like Christmas, again.

Freezing weather and more snow is in the forecast tonight, according to Meteorologist Russ Lacate.

“A few sleety showers change over to flurries tonight, depositing minimal amounts of a cm or two across parts of the Lower Mainland, low minus 3. Then the arctic air checks in ahead of the holidays, with sunnier but cold conditions for Friday afternoon and Saturday.”

Some parts of the Lower Mainland have already reported some flurries.

In anticipation of the cooler weather, Vancouver’s city crews are preparing to work overnight to salt and plow major roadways.

According to the city, staff have been salting corner ramps and bus stops, and have also redeployed water and sewer operations crews to help with salting and removing snow where necessary.

In addition to the number of staff scheduled to work throughout the night, by-law officers have also been out issuing warnings to property owners who haven’t already cleared their sidewalks.Remember, property owners and tenants are responsible for clearing snow and ice from the sidewalks around their homes by 10 a.m. after a snowfall throughout the week. Those who don’t comply may receive a fine from the city.

Between December 2016 and February 2017, the City of Vancouver handed out warnings to more than 10,000 homeowners, without roughly 500 paying up.

As part of its snow response, city staff are also thanking people who have been “Snow Angels” for helping others to clear their sidewalks as well as their own.
