Dark new details in Oak Bay double homicide

OAK BAY (NEWS 1130) – There are dark new details emerging about the double homicide in Oak Bay on Vancouver Island on Christmas Day, which left two young girls dead, with a report indicating the injured man found with them was their father.

The injuries that man had were apparently self-inflicted, according to the Times Colonist newspaper.

“It’s a ground floor apartment right on Beach Drive, steps from the Oak Bay Marina,” says Katie DeRosa, a reporter with the Times Colonist, of the building where this all happened. “It’s an older building, but it sounds like there’s a lot of seniors and families in that building. Certainly neighbours are shocked.”

That report cites people close to the family of the two girls, who were just four and six, who say the children were the subject of a bitter custody battle.

Trisha is a friend of the mother of the two girls. She isn’t commenting on the case or the reports of a custody battle but says the community is rallying around the mother.

“We have a very close-knit group of friends around us,” says Trisha. “We live in a really special city where people really do watch out for one another. There is so much care and compassion coming from the community.”

She’s also providing some insight into who these girls were. “The girls were just full of light,” says Trisha. “They were very happy, very busy and silly girls, who loved to have lots of fun. They were involved in lots and lots of different activities, and like many kids their age, they a real spirit for life and lots of energy.”

Police have yet to confirm many of these details but have said that foul play is suspected.

“Everyone is just feeling shocked at this time,” says Trisha. “The devastation is still to come. I think at this time it’s hard for all of us to understand what’s happened, and also to get our heads around what this means, just how permanent it is.”

DeRosa says the next question is the possibility of charges.

“Obviously the police investigation is still ongoing,” says DeRosa. “No charges have been laid yet as I’m aware. That will be a big development when that does happen, if it happens. I think we need to learn more about [the father] and what was going on leading up to this incident.”
