Investigation launched after police cruiser hits pedestrian in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Independent Investigations Office has been called in after a collision with a police cruiser left a pedestrian with serious injuries on Saturday night.

An on-duty Vancouver police officer was behind the wheel of the cruiser, which struck the pedestrian near Knight Street and East 20th Ave about 9:30 p.m. The pedestrian was taken to hospital and was still in a serious condition on Sunday.

“We’re still trying to determine the exact extent of the injuries, but our understanding right now is that they are serious,’ Ron MacDonald with the IIO says.

The police officer was not physically injured.

MacDonald says the IIO is required to investigate.

“We investigate any situation where the interaction with a police officer may have led to serious injuries or death,. And therefore it’s not necessarily the case that there has been an allegation of wrongdoing against any police officer.”

The IIO is now looking for evidence, interviewing witnesses and reviewing video footage.

It’s the first full investigation launched by the IIO this year.
